Dhaka University's Department of Criminology and "Kaan Petey Roi" jointly organized a workshop. On Monday, March 20, 2023, the Department of Criminology at Dhaka University and "Kaan Petey Roi," Bangladesh's first mental health and suicide prevention helpline, jointly conducted a workshop. The Department of Criminology at Dhaka University is deeply concerned about the mental health of its students. Therefore, creating a healthy and productive academic environment for students is essential. To this end, the independent organization Sajida Foundation and the "Kaan Petey Roi" sub-organization "Swojon" have collaborated to organize this workshop. The event was attended by respected Chairperson Shaharia Afrin of the Criminology Department, Brishty Sujan Gomez from Sajida Foundation, Labib Maliyat and Ashik Abdullah Shubh from "Kaan Petey Roi," along with students from various academic years in the Criminology Department. Guest speakers discussed the importance of mental health and the need for proper care, especially in the context of students' lives. They emphasized that mental health often remains overlooked despite its significance. They provided insights into the prevalence of mental health issues, the early signs of suicidal tendencies, ways to assist individuals with suicidal tendencies, and dispelled various misconceptions and stigmas associated with suicide. Representatives from "Kaan Petey Roi" and "Swojon" shared information about their initiatives with the students. In her closing speech, Chairperson Shaharia Afrin of the Criminology Department expressed her gratitude to the organizers and volunteers. She emphasized the importance of caring for both physical and mental health and urged everyone to take the initiative in addressing this matter. She highlighted the significance of providing mental health services to everyone, eliminating stigma and discrimination, and assured that the Criminology Department supports any future endeavors in this regard. The students were also encouraged to actively participate in this important initiative. Lastly, she extended her best wishes to the guest participants in the department and commended the workshop's productive results in terms of student engagement and enlightenment.
