In celebration of International Women's Day, a discussion session was held in Dhaka University's Department of Criminology. On Monday, March 6, 2023, Dhaka University's Department of Criminology, in collaboration with the Bangladesh Women's Council, organized this session. The event's topic of discussion was "Cyber Harassment and Violence: Building a Safer World Online for Women." The event was presided over by Chairperson Shaharia Afrin of the Department, and as a special guest, Dr. Zia Rahman, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University, was present. Additionally, Senior Research Training Officer Shahzadi Shamiha Afzali and Senior Advocate Fatema Begum spoke during the session. A welcoming speech was given by Afroza Arman, the Research Officer of the Women's Council. During the event, Professor Zia Rahman provided an overview of women's struggles worldwide in the context of women's rights and contributions to various national and international organizations' history. He stressed the importance of continuous awareness beyond a specific day for women's rights to be upheld and for a just and equal society to be established. Shahzadi Shamiha Afzali emphasized that the first educational institution regarding crime prevention must be the family, where each individual needs to initiate the practice of crime prevention, resistance, and protest. This way, awareness will spread among all. Afroza Arman stated, "Women's rights are incomplete without human rights." She encouraged young generations to take the lead in securing women's rights and establishing an equitable society. Fatema Begum from the Bangladesh Women's Council highlighted the various protective and legal measures against cybercrime and online security for women. She educated the participants on this topic. The session concluded with Q&A where the students asked various questions related to cyber harassment and women's safety online. Respect and appreciation were conveyed to Begum Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain, the pioneer of women's awakening, from the event. Chairperson Shaharia Afrin expressed gratitude to the relevant participants in the program. Overall, it was emphasized that women's empowerment and ensuring their rights should be a continuous effort beyond a specific event, and various workshops, training programs, and campaigns would be undertaken jointly by the Department of Criminology and the Women's Council in the future.
